We continue Introducing the BioAnalyt Team series by spotlighting Selina Esche, who is a member of our Product Development team. Selina was born in a small medieval town in the German state of Thuringia, which is also known as “the green heart of Germany.” Thuringia boasts famous personalities in history like the composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach and is arguably home to the best sausages in Germany. Selina spent a lot of time outdoors in her childhood and adolescent years where she enjoyed hiking or mountain biking.
After high school, Selina moved to the city of Cologne and where she did her apprenticeship as a biology-technical assistant. Enthusiastic about this field of work, she decided to study biotechnology at the university. Her studies led her to Berlin, where she had both her Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in Biotechnology at the Beuth University of Applied Science. Selina’s professional career first led her to research in the field of epigenomics. After her education, she worked for a company specializing in in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) and the early detection of cancer in the blood. Her tasks were to identify new epigenetic biomarkers that can be detected in human blood by PCR technology. She also supported the verification and validation process to bring a new IVD product to market. After five years of working for this company, she decided to take a job closer to her home and started working at another diagnostics company in Potsdam. There, Selina had the opportunity to bike to work and loved the beautiful workplace on Potsdam Hermannswerder. This is a lovely tiny island in the south of Potsdam. She developed PCR assays for food quality control and the quality control of bacterial ingredients used in cancer therapy. In addition to developing PCR tests, she did a lot of work in microbiology and molecular biology.
Selina started her BioAnalyt experience in January 2021 as a member of the product development team. She contributes to the team, by bringing on board her vast scientific knowledge and practical experience in diagnostic methods and devices. Currently, she diligently works with the team to develop iCheck Anemia, BioAnalyt’s new rapid, point-of-care device to test for the underlying causes of anemia using only a drop of blood. She also works to help bring iCheck Anemia to the European market as an IVD product. She still enjoys biking to work, only snow can keep her from doing it. She says, ” I feel very well accepted in the BioAnalyt team and am happy to be a part of it.”
Outside of her work, Selina loves to spend time with her husband and three children in Potsdam, where the family lives. She also enjoys spending time outdoors, meeting friends, and loves to bake. Preferably with a lot of chocolate. Be sure to get an invite to have her famous chocolate cake with some coffee next time you visit BioAnalyt!
