A new study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, examines how bariatric surgery affects breast milk concentration. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery have a restricted or shortened digestive tract and often develop nutrient deficiencies. However, whether nutrients in the breast milk are impacted by the surgery was previously unknown.

In this study, scientists evaluated breast milk energy, macronutrient and vitamin A concentrations. The results showed that women who underwent bariatric surgery had adequate nutrient concentrations during the first six weeks of lactation, suggesting that breastfeeding should not be limited in this population.

BioAnalyt’s product, iCheck Fluoro, was used to measure vitamin A levels in this study. iCheck Fluoro is a state-of-the-art, portable fluorometer that provides accurate vitamin A measurements on food and biological fluid samples.
